April is Autism Awareness Month
AUTISM IS A COMPLEX DEVELOPMENTAL DISORDER THAT TYPICALLY APPEARS IN THE FIRST 3 YEARS OF LIFE. IT AFFECTS HOW A CHILD’S BRAIN DEVELOPS THE ABILITY TO INTERACT WITH OTHERS AND COMMUNICATE.
What Causes Autism?
No single cause of autism has been found. It is likely a combination of both genetic and environmental factors. This is an area of active research. Scientific research studies have shown that Autism is NOT caused by vaccines or any of their components.
In the US, autism prevalence is 1 in every 88 births &1 in every 54 boys.
Early Identification and Treatment Can Change a Child’s Life
Although Autism is not curable, it is treatable. Kids do not “outgrow” autism, but with early intervention, the outcomes and development of a child is significantly improved.
Screening and Early Detection is important to get children the help they need!
Here are some signs to look for in the children in your life:
Lack of or delay in spoken language
Repetitive use of language and/or motor mannerisms (e.g., hand-flapping, twirling objects)
Little or no eye contact
Lack of interest in peer relationships
